Parent Teacher Conference Sign Up

This year you will have an option to have a virtual parent/teacher conference or a face to face parent/teacher conference.  You will be meeting with your homeroom teacher and she will be talking about all subjects.  Please click on your homeroom teacher's conference schedule link below to sign up for a conference.  Please note that virtual conferences will be on Thursday and face to face conferences in your teacher's room will be on Friday.

Look at what we will be learning next week:

Math -  We will practice counting to 120 by tens and ones.  We will continue to represent numbers in expanded form, word form, and base ten blocks.  Your child will practice decomposing a number two ways.  For instance, 21 can be decomposed as 2 tens and 1 one, or 1 ten and 11 ones, or 21 ones.

Fun videos to watch with your child:

Language Arts

Spelling/Phonics -   We will study the short /u/ sound.  Please review the spelling rule with your child at home.  The preassessment will come home on Monday with a list of words for your child to study throughout the week.  Thank you for helping your child with their spelling words!

Reading - We are learning how to use 3 reading apps (Raz Kids, Istation, and Epic).  Raz Kids helps us practice reading aloud and comprehension.  Epic allows us to hear and understand voice intonation while listening to stories. Istation helps with phonemic awareness, comprehension, text fluency, and spelling.  These are great apps to use at home!

***I sent home a yellow paper today with the first grade sight words that your child is responsible for this year.  It shows the 4 different grading periods and the words that your child is responsible for during that grading period.  These are words that they just need to be able to read (not spell).  We call these words "snap words" which means that your child should be able to read them in a SNAP!  If your child struggles to read them, old fashioned flash cards are a great way to help at home.

Writing - We will continue our narrative writing unit.  We will concentrate on using transition words to guide the sequential order of our writing.

Social Studies  - We will identify characteristics of good citizenship including participation in government  by educating oneself about the issues, respectfully holding public officials to their word, and voting.

Science  - We will determine the importance of energy to everyday life.

It's such a joy to teach these little ones science and social studies!!!!  Their passion for learning melts my heart!!

Announcements:

  • School begins at 7:40.  If your child arrives after 7:40 they will need to go to the office and receive a tardy pass.  Please make sure your child arrives in the building before 7:40 each day.
  • Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!!
  • The front car-loop areas are for our families that are dropping off and picking up their child(ren).  In order to help keep our lines moving, we ask parents not to exit their vehicles in the car-loop lines.  If your child requires additional assistance, please park in one of our parking spaces.  We also ask that all families use the designated crosswalks when walking across the parking lot.  This is for the safety of all our learners.  Thank you for your help in keeping our kids safe!
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.  Email is the best way to get a hold of us.  If it's a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.  If it's a question specific to an academic area, please email the teacher that teaches that subject.  We are so excited to partner with you in your child's learning.

Mrs. Sork:  msork@coppellisd.com  (Mrs. Sork teaches math to all of the first grade)

Mrs. Vincenzo:  lvincenzo@coppellisd.com    (Mrs. Vincenzo teaches language arts to all of the first grade)

Mrs. McCullough: jmccullough@coppellisd.com (Mrs. McCullough teaches the science and social studies to all of the first grade.  She also will be taking them to the library each week.)

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Celebrations & Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.
