This year you will have an option to have a virtual parent/teacher conference or a face-to-face parent/teacher conference.  You will be meeting with your homeroom teacher and she will be talking about all subjects.  Please click on your homeroom teacher's conference schedule link below to sign up for a conference.  Please note that virtual conferences will be on Thursday and face-to-face conferences in your teacher's room will be on Friday.

Look at what we will be learning next week:

Math -  We will focus on addition and subtraction strategies to help us remember our facts.  Learners will also be generating a number greater than or less than a given number up to 20.  We will continue to compose and decompose numbers while solving addition and subtraction problems.

Math Activities to do with your child:

*Say 5 numbers 2, 12, 22, 32, 42.  Ask your child to tell you the next 5 numbers

*Please count with your child daily from any given number. :-) Your child has been working on counting to 120 by tens.  Let them show you!  :-)

*skip count by tens /skip count by tens from any given number up to 120 or beyond.

*Have your child pick a two-digit number less than 20 and have them tell you what is 10 more or 10 less.  For those of you who want a challenge, have them pick a two-digit number greater than 20.  Have a discussion with your child.  Here are some questions you can ask. What is one more and one less?  Is it even or odd?  How many tens does your number have?  Can you tell me the expanded form?  What digit is in the one place, etc.

* 10 minutes of Dreambox  - Dreambox can be challenging.  Please do not tell your child the answer.  You are more than welcome to guide them and discuss the problem as they work to find an answer.   The program is designed to give your child problems based on their level.  Many times, children who are given the answers,  become upset because the questions become too hard and they are not ready for such a challenging level.

Language Arts

Spelling/Phonics -   Due to the short week next week, we will not have a new spelling rule.  Thank you for helping your child with spelling at home!  It has made such a difference in their reading and writing.  I can tell that they are transferring their spelling skills into all areas of literacy.  Woohoo!

Reading - We will learn how to smooth out our voices when we read.  We will also learn how to scoop up phrases as we read to help build fluency.

***The list of first grade sight words were sent home last week.  If you need a new copy, please let me know.  We are finishing up the first list of words next week.  There are 13 words that your child must be able to read in a "snap" for our first grading period.  Please help your child at home to reinforce this skill.

Writing -  I am so proud of our little writers!  They have been busy writing independent narrative stories.  Each story has a topic sentence, a sequential order of events, and a closing sentence. They are writing rockstars!!

Social Studies  - We will explain and practice voting as a way of making choices and decisions.

Science  -We will determine the importance of energy to everyday life.

It's such a joy to teach these little ones science and social studies!!!!  Their passion for learning melts my heart!!

Color Run

Announcements:

  • School begins at 7:40.  If your child arrives after 7:40 they will need to go to the office and receive a tardy pass.  Please make sure your child arrives in the building before 7:40 each day.
  • Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!!
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Email is the best way to get in touch with your child's teacher:

  • Mrs. Sork:  msork@coppellisd.com  (math)
  • Mrs. Vincenzo:  lvincenzo@coppellisd.com  (language arts)
  • Mrs. McCullough: jmccullough@coppellisd.com (science and social studies0

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Celebrations & Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.
