Calendar
January 16th - No School - MLK Holiday
January 30th - PTO Meeting at 6:00.
January 27th - PTO fundraiser at Interskate from 6:00 - 8:00.
February 17th - No school for learners - CISD staff workday
February 20th - Bad Weather Day (no school if we haven't used a bad weather day in CISD)
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD'S IPAD IS FULLY CHARGED EACH DAY. WE HAVE A LOT OF IPADS COMING TO SCHOOL THAT ARE NOT CHARGED. SOME ACTIVITIES WE DO REQUIRE AN IPAD AND IT CAN BE DIFFICULT IF YOUR CHILD DOESN'T HAVE A WORKING IPAD TO USE. THANK YOU!!
Math - I am so proud of our first-grade mathematicians. They have been blowing me away with how well they can skip count by twos, fives, and tens. Next week we will continue to generate word problems as well as continue to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. They will practice solving word problems with the unknowns in all positions. For example:
- Mrs. Sork has some stickers. Peter gave Mrs. Sork 4 more stickers. Now she has 17 stickers. How many stickers did Mrs. Sork have to start with? ? + 4 = 17
- Mrs. Sork has 17 stickers. She gave some to Cooper. Now she has 4. How many did she give to Cooper? 17 - ? = 4
- Caden had some pencils. He lost 8. Now he has 11. How many did he have in the beginning? ? - 8 = 11
Count by tens from any number - https://www.yout-ube.com/watch?v=ncgNKmESFLY
* 10 minutes of Dreambox - Dreambox can be challenging. Please do not tell your child the answers. You are more than welcome to guide them and discuss the problem as they work to find an answer. The program is designed to give your child problems based on their level. Many times, children who are given the answers, become upset because the questions become too hard and they are not ready for such a challenging level.
*Play " Guess My Number"
- I am thinking of an even number. It is greater than 17 and less than 19? What number am I thinking?
- I am thinking of a number. It has 2 tens and 3 ones. What number am I thinking?
- I am thinking of a number. It has 1 ten and 15 ones. What number am I thinking?
*Say 5 numbers 2, 12, 22, 32, 42. Ask your child to tell you the next 5 numbers
*Please count with your child daily from any given number. :-) Your child has been working on counting to 120 by fives and tens and twos. Let them show you! :-)
*Skip count by tens from any given number up to 120 or beyond. 25, 35, 45, 55, ...
*Have your child pick a two-digit number. Ask them to tell you what is 10 more or 10 less. Have a discussion with your child. Here are some questions you can ask. What is one more and one less? Is it even or odd? How many tens does your number have? Can you tell me the expanded form? What digit is in one place, etc?
Language Arts
Spelling/Grammar/Phonics: We will review nouns and verbs. In spelling, we will learn how to make words plural that end is /s/, /sh/, or /x/.
Writing: After a fun winter writing activity, we will begin our next unit on non-fiction writing. This is always a favorite unit as we are able to show others our expert knowledge on different topics when writing.
Reading: We are talking about Author's Purpose. We will look at the books we read and decide what the author's purpose was in writing each book (to entertain, to inform, or to persuade).
**Don't forget to let your child log on to the Kids A-Z (Raz-Kids) app at home. The "Level Up" part of the app is excellent for listening, reading, and answering comprehension questions.
Social Studies - We will sequence and categorize information.
Science - We will record weather information, including relative temperature such as hot or cold, clear or cloudy, calm or windy, and rainy or icy.
TCE Parents and Families – Yearbook Photos Needed!
Volunteer Background Check Form - REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER
If you anticipate volunteering on campus at all this year, please fill it out. A new one must be completed each school year.
- School begins at 7:40. If your child arrives after 7:40 they will need to go to the office and receive a tardy pass. Please make sure your child arrives in the building before 7:40 each day.
- Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day. Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening. Thank you!!
- Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar. Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior. Many times, the children forget. If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day. If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment. Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
- Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.
Email is the best way to get in touch with your child's teacher:
- Mrs. Sork: msork@coppellisd.com (math)
- Mrs. Vincenzo: lvincenzo@coppellisd.com (language arts)
- Mrs. McCullough: jmccullough@coppellisd.com (science and social studies)
Dismissal
If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher. Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent. Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message. If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.
Celebrations & Birthday Treats
We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.
If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients. Please send the treats to our school nurse. She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class. These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.
Who can visit my child for lunch?
Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria.
District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.
If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district eschool system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.
