**Don't forget to wear your bathing suit and some shorts/shirt over it.  Apply your sunscreen at home.  Please wear comfortable shoes that can be removed and put on easily and that can get wet.  If you didn't order a school lunch for field day make sure you bring a sack lunch!  If you have any questions about this day, you can email your teacher.

Tuesday Bring a beach towel and a stuffed animal for a Wild Kratts' day! We will also be watching the dress rehearsal of the 5th-grade talent show today!

We will have a yearbook party in the afternoon.  If your child purchased a yearbook, please bring it on this day to collect signatures.  If your child did not purchase a yearbook, we will supply something so that they can still get signatures from their friends.

Wednesday We will enjoy an extra recess with popsicles!

Thursday - Game Day (bring your favorite game to share with your friends.  All games should be non-electronic and also labeled with your child's name.  It should be a quick game that your child can explain how to play.)

Friday - Early Dismissal - 12:30
We will be eating lunch at school. Lunch visitors will not be allowed on this day as we will be on a shortened schedule.

We want to thank all of our amazing parents for sharing your children with us this year!  We had a wonderful year watching them grow and learn.  We wish you an amazing summer full of fun and excitement!  We can't wait to see our amazing first graders in the hallway when they are in second grade!  Don't forget to stop by and say hello!

Love,
Mrs. Sork, Mrs. Vincenzo, and Mrs. McCullough

We had a great time visiting a second-grade math class.  First-grade mathematicians were allowed to ask questions to second-grade mathematicians.

Look at what we will be learning next week:

Math

We will continue to review our first-grade math skills.  Learners will begin working on an end-of-the-year choice board to show their learning.

Fun videos to watch with your child:

Math Activities to do with your child at home

  • Go on a shape hunt with your child.   Let them tell you all about the attributes of a particular shape
  • Play guess my shape?  I am thinking of a shape that has 8 vertices, 12 edges, and 6 faces.  What shape am I thinking of? ( cube or rectangular prism)   Two triangles make me.  What shape am I thinking of? ( rhombus) I have 5 sides and 5 vertices.  What shape am I thinking of? (Pentagon)
  • Gather a group of coins and practice counting them together :-) As we are counting our coins, we  say "When we  change coins, we change the way we count."  Have fun!
  • Generate story problems about family members.  For example, Mom went to the store and bought some cookies.  She ate half a dozen cookies in the car.  Now she has 10 cookies.  How many cookies did mom have in the beginning?  :-)
  • Practice counting to 120 by ones from any given number.
  • Practice counting to 120 by tens from any given number.
  • Practice counting to 120 by fives.
  • Practice counting to 120 by twos.
  • DREAMBOX - 15 minutes daily.  Please do not tell your child the answers.  The program is designed to help them at their level.
Language Arts
We will spend next week reviewing some first grade skills and preparing ourselves for second grade.  How in the world is the end of the year upon us already?  Your sweet kids are amazing readers and writers!  We had so much fun finishing up our realistic fiction books this week and then spending a day reading each other's stories and writing compliments.  They really do amaze me!

**Your child will have access to the Raz Kids App over the summer.   Please make sure they log on and practice their skills so that they don't lose any fluency or comprehension over the summer.

Social Studies  - We will continue learning about landforms.

Science  - We will continue learning about food chains and interdependence.

Announcements:

  • Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!!
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Email is the best way to get in touch with your child's teacher:

  • Mrs. Sork:  msork@coppellisd.com  (math)
  • Mrs. Vincenzo:  lvincenzo@coppellisd.com  (language arts)
  • Mrs. McCullough: jmccullough@coppellisd.com (science and social studies)

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Celebrations & Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

School Lunches

Who can visit my child for lunch?

Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria.

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.

If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district eschool system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

For the last two years, free and reduced meals were provided for all Texas public school children.  Beginning September 29th, families must complete an application to qualify for free or reduced-priced meals. For more information, check out the Coppell ISD Child Nutrition website.  Complete your School Meal Application here.  Allow up to ten days to process your application
