Math

We will organize data to make it useful for interpreting information and solving problems.  We will use data to create picture and bar-type graphs as well as draw conclusions and generate and answer questions using information from picture and bar-type graphs.

• Go on a shape hunt with your child.   Let them tell you all about the attributes of a particular shape
• Play guess my shape?  I am thinking of a shape that has 8 vertices, 12 edges, and 6 faces.  What shape am I thinking of? ( cube or rectangular prism)   Two triangles make me.  What shape am I thinking of? ( rhombus) I have 5 sides and 5 vertices.  What shape am I thinking of? (Pentagon) 
• Gather a group of coins and practice counting them together :-) As we are counting our coins, we  say "When we  change coins, we change the way we count."  Have fun! 
• Generate story problems about family members.  For example, Mom went to the store and bought some cookies.  She ate half a dozen cookies in the car.  Now she has 10 cookies.  How many cookies did mom have in the beginning?  :-) 
• Practice counting to 120 by ones from any given number.  
• Practice counting to 120 by tens from any given number.  
• Practice counting to 120 by fives. 
• Practice counting to 120 by twos. 
• DREAMBOX - 15 minutes daily.  Please do not tell your child the answers.  The program is designed to help them at their level.  

Language Arts  

We will be taking our end of year MAP test.  1B and 1C will be doing it on May 4th and 1A will be taking it on May 5th.  It is IMPORTANT that your child's iPad is fully charged on their day of testing.  I am also working on the end of year M-Class testing.  These results will be sent home at the end of first grade.  I can't wait to see how far everyone has come since the beginning of the year.  I am so proud of them! 

Writing:  We will put the finishing touches on our first realistic fiction story.  We have been working so hard to include sound effects, dialogue between characters, and creating a visual for the reader to imagine. 

Reading: We amaze ourselves at how we can read just about any book that we pick up in our classroom!  It makes my teacher heart so happy to see all these readers loving and enjoying books.  We use about 30 minutes of our language arts block to just dive in and read.  We read from our leveled books, choice books, and chapter books.  I love to see what they pick to read and what their favorites are.  Way to go first grade!  

**Don't forget to let your child log on to the Kids A-Z (Raz-Kids) app at home.  The "Level Up" part of the app is excellent for listening, reading, and answering comprehension questions.  There are lots of great non-fiction books in their Raz-Kids libraries. All iPads have been updated to your child's current reading level. 

Social Studies  - We will begin our study of landforms!!

Science  - We will conclude our study of plants!!!!

TCE PTO is looking for your help in gathering photos for the Town Center Yearbook! We set up an easy process for you to share your images from different campus or classroom events. We would love for all families to contribute their images so we can make sure we have equal representation from all grade levels and classrooms! Volunteer Background Check Form - REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER

If you anticipate volunteering on campus at all this year, please fill it out. A new one must be completed each school year. If you plan on chaperoning our field trip, this must be filled out at least 10 days prior to our field trip.  You will not be able to chaperone our field trip unless this form is correctly filled out ten days prior to our field trip.  Please click on the VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECK FORM above to fill out. 

• School begins at 7:40.  If your child arrives after 7:40 they will need to go to the office and receive a tardy pass.  Please make sure your child arrives in the building before 7:40 each day.  
• Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!! 
• Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)

Celebrations & Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  

 If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

Who can visit my child for lunch?

Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria. 

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.

If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district eschool system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

For the last two years, free and reduced meals were provided for all Texas public school children.  Beginning September 29th, families must complete an application to qualify for free or reduced-priced meals. For more information, check out the Coppell ISD Child Nutrition website.  Complete your School Meal Application here.  Allow up to ten days to process your application.

Scientist of the Week

Moksha taught 1B that putting a stalk of celery in a tube of water with food coloring the stalk of celery will change to that color.

Plants absorb nutrients from the soil through the roots and up through the plant's stem. This was a fun experiment that went right along with our unit on plants!!  We were studying the jobs of the different parts of plants!  Way to go Moksha!!  You rocked it!!!

We had an absolute amazing time at the Dallas Zoo!  Thank you to all of our wonderful chaperones who helped make this day possible! We couldn't do it without you!! There are some pictures of our day below.

 We will end our unit on telling time and begin our measurement unit using nonstandard tools.  Your amazing first grader has been using an app called "telling time".  This app will help them become an expert at telling time. :-) Please continue to practice telling time with your children at home as well as counting change.  Thank you for the extra practice at home.  It makes such a difference.  :-)

Grammar/Spelling:  CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!!  We have made it through our last spelling rule for first grade.  Woohoo!!!  For the remainder of the year, we will work on putting all of those rules to good use through reading and writing.  We will also review these rules as we work through our the last few weeks of school.

We will also be talking about abbreviations and looking at the most common abbreviations that we see. 

We will also be reviewing synonyms/antonyms/homophones through partner work.  We are working on being able to correctly identify which pairs of words fall into each category. 

Writing:  We are working hard on our first realistic fiction story.  We are learning that adding conversation to stories can increase enjoyment when reading.  

Reading: We will work on monitoring and self correcting oral reading fluency.

Shivin taught 1C how to make a volcano erupt!!!

He used baking soda and vinegar to make the eruption.

Scientists of the Week

Pranika taught 1C how to make Milk Art.  She was very prepared and had practiced at home.  It was beautiful!!! She taught 1C the "magic" ingredient was the dish soap.  1C loved your experiment!! Way to go!!

Toshith taught 1B how to make red by mixing yellow salt, detergent, and lemon water.  It was a fascinating experiment!  1B loved it!! You were an amazing scientist! You rocked it!!
