Math - Learners will practice skip counting by twos to 120.  Please practice this skill at home. Your child will also continue to generate word problems as well as continue to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems.  They will practice solving word problems with the unknowns in all positions.  For example: 

• Mrs. Sork has some stickers.  Peter gave Mrs. Sork 4 more stickers.  Now she has 17 stickers.  How many stickers did Mrs. Sork have to start with?   ? + 4 = 17

• Mrs. Sork has 17 stickers.  She gave some to Cooper.  Now she has 4.  How many did she give to Cooper?  17 - ? = 4

• Caden had some pencils.  He lost 8.  Now he has 11. How many did he have in the beginning?  ? - 8 = 11

Math Activities to do with your child:

* 10 minutes of Dreambox  - Dreambox can be challenging.  Please do not tell your child the answers.  You are more than welcome to guide them and discuss the problem as they work to find an answer.   The program is designed to give your child problems based on their level.  Many times, children who are given the answers,  become upset because the questions become too hard and they are not ready for such a challenging level.  

*Play " Guess My Number"

• I am thinking of an even number.  It is greater than 17 and less than 19?  What number am I thinking?   
• I am thinking of a number.   It has 2 tens and 3 ones.  What number am I thinking? 
• I am thinking of a number.  It has 1 ten and 15 ones.   What number am I thinking? 

*Say 5 numbers 2, 12, 22, 32, 42.  Ask your child to tell you the next 5 numbers

*Please count with your child daily from any given number. :-) Your child has been working on counting to 120 by fives and tens and twos.   Let them show you!  :-) 

*Skip count by tens from any given number up to 120 or beyond.  25, 35, 45, 55, ...

*Have your child pick a two-digit number.  Ask them to tell you what is 10 more or 10 less.    Have a discussion with your child.  Here are some questions you can ask. What is one more and one less?  Is it even or odd?  How many tens does your number have?  Can you tell me the expanded form?  What digit is in one place, etc?

Language Arts 

Spelling/Grammar/Phonics:  Due to my unexpected absence, we never got around to learning verbs.  We will dig into verbs the week we return from winter break.  There will not be spelling the week we get back.

Writing:  We will write about goals we have for the new year.  Happy 2023!!

Reading:  We will open the third library in my classroom- chapter books!  We are ready!!  This is always a highlight during the year!  

Social Studies  - We will use a simple timeline to distinguish among past, present and future.

Science  -  We will begin our Weather Unit.

TCE Parents and Families – Yearbook Photos Needed!

TCE PTO is looking for your help in gathering photos for the Town Center Yearbook! We set up an easy process for you to share your images from different campus or classroom events. We would love for all families to contribute their images so we can make sure we have equal representation from all grade levels and classrooms! Please use the following step-by-step directions document or video to create a Lifetouch account and begin uploading your images now. Thank you!

Volunteer Background Check Form - REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER

If you anticipate volunteering on campus at all this year, please fill it out. A new one must be completed each school year.

• School begins at 7:40.  If your child arrives after 7:40 they will need to go to the office and receive a tardy pass.  Please make sure your child arrives in the building before 7:40 each day.  
• Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!! 
• Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-) 
• Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Dismissal 

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes. 

Celebrations & Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  

 If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home. 

School Lunches

Who can visit my child for lunch?

Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria. 

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.

If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district eschool system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

For the last two years, free and reduced meals were provided for all Texas public school children.  Beginning September 29th, families must complete an application to qualify for free or reduced-priced meals. For more information, check out the Coppell ISD Child Nutrition website.  Complete your School Meal Application here.  Allow up to ten days to process your application.

December 12 - 16

 Kindergarten and First Grade will be working with the Coppell Lions Club to provide food and toys for more than 100 Coppell families during the holidays. Please bring canned food items and/or a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Coppell Lions Club.  We will be collecting canned goods and toys from November 28th  to December 13^th. You may drop your items by the TCE giving tree in the front of the school.  THANK YOU for your donation!!  

December 12th - Bring a pillow, a small stuffed animal, and a blanket to school

December 13th - Bring a game to class.  Please make sure it is a game that you are able to explain to your friends.  

December 14th - Wear your pajamas and slippers to class.  Make sure to have tennis shoes for specials. 

December 15th - Winter Party 2:00

December 16th - Early Release 12:30 No lunch visitors this day due to early release.

* Have your child tell you a story problem for a math equation.  

For example,  ? -8 =12.   Rudolph had some carrots.  He ate 8 carrots.  Now he has 12 carrots.  How many carrots did Rudolph have in the beginning?  20 carrots.  

* Have your child tell you a doubles fact, a double plus one fact, a double minus one fact, and a fact he or she solved by counting on.  Have your amazing mathematician describe how each strategy works. 

*Give your child a number.  Let them tell you everything they know about that number.  For example,  My number is 62.  It is even, 10 more is 72, 10 less is 52, I see 6 tens and 2 ones, I also know 62 can be 5 tens and 12 ones, or 4 tens and 22 ones, etc..

A note from Mrs. Matlock: 

Each year the Lions Club of Coppell provides holiday baskets and toys to families in the Coppell ISD attendance area.  Last year Lion's Club provided a special Christmas for over 127 families and hundreds of children who might otherwise have gone without.  The food baskets and toys are delivered by members of the Lions Club of Coppell, and the identity of the recipients is kept confidential.  All Lion's Club needs to know is the address and the family demographics, sizes, and any special needs the family may have.  If your family would like to apply for a holiday basket and toys, please email Town Center's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.

SCIENTISTS of the Week!!

Shreyan taught 1A how to lift an ice cube with a string!

He proved to us that the salt melted the thin layer of the ice and when the salt dissolved, the ice refroze around the string!!

Way to go, Shreyan!  YOU are an amazing scientist!!

Krishna taught 1C how to make a Lava Lamp!!

Mixing the vinegar and the baking soda made carbon dioxide bubbles.

His explanation was very precise, and it was beautiful!

Selim taught 1B how to make milk art with shapes!

He taught them that the dish soap mix pushed the colors away

and it made shapes!  We had never seen this experiment performed, and we enjoyed it very much! Selim did a great job explaining each part of his experiment! 1B LOVED it!!!  I am SO proud of YOU!!

Custom/ Tradition Projects!!!

We become even closer after learning about our different customs and traditions!! Our little ones are learning that we may have different beliefs, but we always need to respect one another!!  

They did an amazing job with their posters and with their presentation skills!  Way to go First Grade!!!
